If you are an avid diver and watch lover, you are no stranger to the Promaster name. Launched in 1989 by Japanese company Citizen, this iconic brand was created to meet the demands of professionals working in the most demanding conditions - on land, at sea and in the air. Since its inception, Promaster has grown to a collection comprising over 30 models, each designed with specific professional use in mind.
This year, to mark the 35th anniversary of this legendary line, Citizen is introducing three limited editions - one for the skies, one for land and one for the sea. It is the latter, a new version of the acclaimed Challenge Diver watch, also known as the Fujitsubo, that comes in Super Titanium with a Duratect Platinum finish and blue details evoking the depths of the ocean.
But before we dive into the details of this new titanium edition, let's go back in time and understand what the Promaster brand actually stands for. Citizen's history as a professional watchmaker goes back far before 1989. Back in the 1960s, Citizen was already producing watches that could handle extreme conditions, such as the Seven Star model that proved its worth on the wrists of Japanese climbers when they scaled the North Face of the Eiger in 1969. Then in the 1970s came the Challenge Diver, a watch that was popular with soldiers and divers alike. And it was these models that inspired the watch we're reviewing today.
Citizen, always on the cutting edge of technological innovation, quickly embraced quartz technology and in 1985 introduced the Aqualand - the first quartz diver's watch with an electronic depth sensor. This groundbreaking model gained popularity in the diving community and became the basis for the creation of the Promaster brand in 1989. The Promaster concept was built on three pillars - land, sky and sea - and included models such as the Altichron, Aerochron and Aqualand. 35 years later, these pillars still inspire the current collection, including the Challenge Diver Fujitsubo.
The original Challenge Diver, introduced in 1977, was a chunky diver's watch with a 41mm diameter, rotating bezel and luminescent dial. With a water resistance of up to 150 metres, it gained popularity not only among recreational divers, but also among members of the Royal Australian Navy. Its durability is evidenced by a story from 1983, when a Citizen Challenge Diver watch was found on an Australian beach after years of being underwater. Despite being covered in blisters, it still worked - a testament to its incredible quality and construction.
Based on this iconic model, Citizen created a modern version of the Promaster Mechanical Diver 200m, nicknamed the Fujitsubo. This edition, first launched in 2022, was made from lightweight and durable titanium and offered excellent value for money. To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Promaster, Citizen now comes up with a limited edition that adds new colour accents and a Duratect Platinum finish.
The new model retains the classic design of the original 1977 watch, but adds modern technology and materials. The Super Titanium case, which Citizen was the first to use in watchmaking back in 1970, features a Duratect Platinum finish that gives it a shiny, silvery hue. The watch has a diameter of 41 mm, a thickness of 12.3 mm and meets ISO certification for diving watches with a water resistance of up to 200 metres. A blue bezel with a glossy finish and a dial inspired by the ocean and Long Reef beach in Australia give the watch an elegant and fresh look. Luminescent elements ensure excellent legibility day and night.
Inside the watch is the Citizen 9051 automatic calibre, which offers a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, a 42-hour power reserve and antimagnetic protection up to 16,000 A/m. The watch is completed with a titanium bracelet with Duratect Platinum finish and a folding clasp with safety features and a diving attachment.
The limited edition Citizen Promaster 35th Anniversary "Fujitsubo" Titanium Diver 200m (reference number NB6026-56L) is limited to 4,500 pieces. This watch offers excellent quality, durability and comfort thanks to the use of titanium and Duratect finish. Blue accents and a glossy finish give it a touch of exclusivity. Simply put, this is a true triumph of watchmaking artistry.
