Alexa Hibberta - Against the Clock

We are proud to introduce Alex Hibbert as a new Luminox friend and support him on two more expeditions in January and February.

Alex Hibbert is the holder of a world record in polar travel. In July 2008, he completed his 113-kilometer and 113-day "long trip" over ice-skating, along with teammate George Bullard. No more supplies or physical support, and the last week with almost no food.

In the winter of 2019, Alex Hibbert performs two world record attempts in different areas of the Arctic. The main focus will be an athletic and technical challenge against time on both routes. In the true sense, it will apply that every second is counted, i.e. #EverySecondCounts. Alex's every navigation decision and hours of effort on skis will dictate his success or failure.

Expedition One: Western Greenland, north of Arctic Circle

At the beginning of January, still in the middle of winter with limited sunlight, Alex will travel between the coastal Inuit community of Sisimiut and Kangerlussuaq, from where he will fly back to Europe. This route is known as the 165 km long Arctic Circular Trail and is considered one of the most challenging anywhere in the world. Alex will take the road in winter when the valleys, mountains, and lakes will be covered with snow and the conditions will be the most demanding. Initially, the road is steep and mountainous, further inland, becoming more exposed and cooler. He will have to deal with blizzards, thin ice, deep snow, and intense cold. A typical time to travel such a distance is a week or more. Alex will strive for more than half the time to complete the route to set the world record.

Expedition Two: Svalbard, High Arctic Island group (Norway/Russia)

Alex goes further into the northern Arctic and tries to accelerate to the next level. He identified the route on the main island of the remote polar island of Svalbard, home to polar bears, caribou and several persistent local residents. This journey will be the test of fitness, efficiency and intuition shaped during Polar Travel years when it tries to set a world record.
