The history of Luminox
The name Luminox came from the combination of the words Lumi (Latin light) and Nox (Latin night). The history of this brand began in 1989 in Switzerland. Barry Cohen, a fashion watch merchant, got the idea - to make a watch that shows time ongoing even in low light. He decided to find a company that has already dealt with these systems. Then, together with Richard Timbo, they founded a company called Luminox. What sets it apart is the unique LLT backlight technology. No external illumination in advance, no button presses. Luminox simply shines constantly, without ceasing. And it lasts incredibly long - up to 25 years. This, of course, was soon noticed in the army. For this purpose, the watch was predestined. That is why they are worn not only by the Navy SEALs, but also by pilots or other members of elite forces of various armies around the world. They are popular wherever their potential is used - durability and legibility even in total darkness.
Luminox watches have several great features
In addition to LLT, it is one of the most advanced material technologies ever. It's CARBONOX™. In 2006, Luminox introduced an innovative carbon compound-based material "consisting of carbon long rods or carbon powder in varying percentages depending on the model". With CARBONOX™ Luminox manufactures watches that have a very stiff and hard finish, bringing the overall life of the watch to a whole new level. Thanks to the perfect combination of strength and durability CARBONOX™ gives Luminox watches the perfect robustness and lightness that customers look for in a reliable sports watch.
The secret to the excellent luminosity of the Luminox is the Luminox Light Technology (LLT). These are borosilicate glass capsules filled with phosphorus and tritium gas. The weakly radioactive tritium upon decay produces a steady stream of electrons that permanently disrupts phosphorus, resulting in a stable luminous phosphor fluorescent layer.
Main advantages of LLT lighting:
- does not need a battery
- does not need daylight
- no need to push buttons
- shines brighter than other luminescence systems
- guaranteed lifetime is 25 years.
