The Bronze Age returns with the latest limited edition Luminox XS.0927 in bronze.
Luminox presents its latest timepiece, a sports timekeeper, forged from bronze, a copper alloy that first appeared around 3500 BC. According to one theory, bronze may have been discovered when rocks rich in tin and copper were used as barriers for fires, giving birth to the Bronze Age, which dominated for nearly three thousand years before being replaced by cheaper iron and stronger steel.
Bronze has several advantageous qualities, and one of them is the reason it was chosen as the metal for the latest edition of Luminox watches: its original and unique patina. Unlike gold and silver, bronze oxidises and changes colour quickly when in contact with air and water. This oxidation process gives the watch a special greenish hue that makes each timepiece a shade that even devoted watch collectors can't resist. With the new Luminox Sport Timer, the Bronze Age is making a comeback.
The new watch is limited to 500 pieces and boasts a bronze bezel and 42mm case. The Sport Timer also features a sapphire crystal front and a movement display on the case back. The watch is water resistant to 200 meters and can be worn during all activities, which will speed up the oxidation process adapting the finish to each wearer. Like every Luminox watch, this watch is equipped with Luminox Light Technology ensuring that the watch will be visible in any lighting conditions for up to 25 years.
Bronze is a copper alloy that is made primarily from copper combined with usually 5.5 to 7% tin, making it both durable and resistant to corrosion in salt water. The discovery of bronze dates back several millennia BC. The Bronze Age lasted nearly three millennia before being replaced by cheaper iron and stronger steel. Bronze has several advantageous properties. The most obvious is that it ages beautifully and acquires a unique patina over time. This is also one of the qualities that distinguishes it from other precious materials such as gold and silver: it oxidizes very quickly once the material comes into contact with oxygen or water, so it changes color very quickly. This oxidation process gives watches a special greenish patina that makes all watches unique. It is this uniqueness that makes bronze watches irresistible to devoted watch collectors.
The patina of each bronze watch will be completely unique and depends on the environment (oxidation happens faster in wetter climates, for example), the type of wear (how heavily the watch is used and therefore how intensively it is touched) and the wearer's body chemistry. This means that each bronze watch will be completely unique to its owner. Although bronze tarnishes once it comes into contact with air or water, historically this material has been used in marine material. This is because one of its properties is its resistance to corrosion in salt water. When bronze is exposed, it oxidizes only on the surface. This oxidation forms a protective layer on the underlying metal. The process of oxidation occurs as a reaction of the material to protect itself from the environment. For watches, this means that the resulting patina protects the watch, thus extending its life and increasing its durability.
The oxidation process can be artificially accelerated, but it is recommended to let the bronze the bronze material to do its own work... In the past, this aforementioned saltwater resistance made bronze the preferred material for use on boats and members (before the widespread use of stainless steel). It also appears in early diving equipment, such as diving helmets.
And now more recently it has spurred a growing trend in (dive) watches. It is therefore more than logical for Luminox to develop a watch made of bronze that is nevertheless waterproof up to 200 m. The bronze colour gives it a vintage, precious look, but it is combined with a modern anti-reflective sapphire crystal, a black sandblasted ceramic ring on a unidirectional rotating bezel, a Sellita automatic movement and 15 LLT (providing visibility in the dark for up to 25 years without the need for external charging), making this vintage-looking watch usable in almost any modern day or night conditions. This is the perfect watch for people looking to add some uniqueness to their collection. And it's unique not only because of its own individual bronze tarnishing, but also because Luminox only makes 500 of these distinctive watches.
